Furnace diagnostic guide for heater cycling on/off:

This article describes what to check if the warm air heating blower fan cycles on and off after the phone call for heat has stopped, that is later on the room thermostat has been satisfied.

Some conditions that cause unexpected furnace fan cycling on and off may be dangerous, risking overheating of the furnace heat exchanger which in turn risks cracks and even carbon monoxide leaks. So information technology is worth checking out this trouble promptly.

This commodity serial describes how to diagnose & prepare just about any problem with forced air heating & cooling systems.

Why does the furnace continue turning on and off repeatedly during the heating bicycle (the thermostat is calling for heat)?

Our furnace seems to turn off and so back on repeatedly during the heating cycle.

I've read that commonly on a call for heat the burner should come on, then the blower, and both should go on running until the call for heat is satisfied.

Reply: Clarify: Three Different Furnace Brusk Cycling Problems

Thanks to reader Tim (2019/04/12) we have kickoff to distinguish three different furnace burner or blower-fan on-off cycling bug:

CASE i: furnace BURNER cycles ON-OFF during a call for rut, BLOWER remains ON - high limit rocking

CASE 2: furnace BLOWER FAN cycles ON-OFF while BURNER remains ON - blower short-cycling

Instance three: furnace BLOWER FAN cycles ON-OFF AFTER a call for heat, BURNER remains OFF - residual heat purge trouble

Instance 4: furnace BURNER and too BLOWER FAN both wheel ON-OFF DURING a CALL FOR HEAT - burner or fuel problem

But first let's check the fan limit switch settings: normally we see

  • FAN OFF at 90 °F - 110 °F - controls the cool-down or residual heat removal time at the cease of a heat-on wheel
  • FAN ON at 130 °F - turns the blower on to deliver oestrus once temperatures are loftier plenty to avoid blowing cool air on occupants
  • HI LIMIT at 200 °F - safety upper limit prevents overheat damage to the heat exchanger by turning off burner

Watch out: never prepare the high limit higher up its factory-setting higher unless the manufacturer and then instructs

Details about these three settings are at FAN LIMIT Command SETTINGS.

Instance #1 (Common) Furnace BURNER Curt-Cycling On and Off During a Call for Heat - Loftier Limit Rocking

In this common situation the furnace rut source or BURNER goes OFF then dorsum ON DURING the HEAT CYCLE while the blower FAN KEEPS RUNNING - that is while the thermostat is continuing to call for oestrus.

In this situation the temperature inside the supply plenum is condign Too HOT - that means that the plenum is at risk overheating - that can crusade cracks or damage.

For safe the burner is turned off by the fan limit switch when the plenum temperature reaches or the How-do-you-do LIMIT prepare on the limit control switch. The burner will stay off until things cool downwards.

In full general when this problem occurs you should look for an air flow blockage, dingy air filter, dirty squirrel muzzle blower fan, loose fan belt, etc.

Formal Definition of Furnace Short Cycling (as well called Shutting Off or Rocking on the High Limit)

Brusk Cycling is when the burner shuts off before a telephone call for heat is met (thermostat setting is non reached).

The burner is shut off by the fan limit switch as a rubber measure out. The air handler volition keep running.

The temperature in the plenum will go downwardly and the burner volition come up on again, simply to shut off again rapidly.

This rocking back and forth on the HI LIMIT setting is bad for the furnace.

The oestrus exchanger is seeing temperatures it was not designed for, and may scissure. Information technology is also very inefficient and does not let proper heat to be distributed to the living space. [one]

Watch out: a croaky leaky heating furnace plenum risks leaking fatal carbon monoxide into the edifice's occupied space. Someone could die.

Causes of Furnace BURNER Brusque Cycling or Loftier Limit Rocking

For a furnace with adequate duct work this rut rising should autumn in the range of 45 degrees to lxx degrees. Anything that causes overheating in the warm air supply plenum will cause furnace short cycling.

Common causes of heating furnace short cycling or rocking are listed here alphabetically. The near-common defects include a dingy air filter, damaged ductwork, and inadequate return air.

  • Air filter defects: filter muddy, clogged, wrong type, too many layers of filtration, or even a filter that has complanate and been sucked into the air handler or dworkwork can crusade dangerous furnace overheating.

Encounter details at Muddied AIR FILTER PROBLEMS

  • Air handler defects ranging from a dingy air filter to dirty blower or incorrect blower speed tin prevent the furnace from producing enough estrus ascent across the oestrus exchanger, causing overheating and short cycling at the heating furnace. We'll requite more specific examples below where we include links to specific diagnosis and repair articles for each of these problems. Whatever defect that restricts air flow through the heating arrangement supply or render ductwork can also cause unexpected furnace burner on and off cycling. For example, belt-driven air handler fans, a too-loose or slipping or damaged drive belt can irksome the blower and thus reduce air catamenia through the system.

And for direct-bulldoze air handler blower fans, an incorrect jumper or dip switch setting on a command lath may mean that the fan runs too slowly and air menses is inadequate.

Air leaks at the air handler (blower unit) may contribute to weak air flow.

    Those details are

at BLOWER LEAKS, RUST & MOLD

  • Dirty air handler blower fan: dirt accumulated on the blades of a typical air handler squirrel cage blower fan assembly tin reduce air menses through the system past 30-40% or even more in some cases.

Run into details at BLOWER FAN ASSEMBLY CLEANING

  • Dirty air handler evaporator or cooling coil (or hydronic water to air heating coil) fins, chock-full by dust, debris, mold volition reduce air catamenia and can crusade short cycling at the burner every bit it overheats the plenum.

See Muddied COOLING Ringlet / EVAPORATOR COIL

  • Ductwork defects: if the heating air ducts are under-sized or are restricted past crimping or damage and then the rate of air flow through the heating system is also low. Weak air flow leads to plenum overheating.

Diagnosis is at AIR FLOW TOO WEAK and

    Measurement of air flow is

    at AIR Menstruation MEASUREMENT CFM

Here are pointers to diagnosis and repair of air catamenia issues traced to either supply ducts or return air ducts:

Inadequate return air / ducts: omission of proper return air ducts to deliver building air to the furnace return plenum; some systems accept some or all return air from a cold basement or clamber infinite - expensive and potentially very dangerous if the return air can draw flue gases into building air.

    See UNSAFE DUCT OPENINGS

A seat-of-the-pants test we perform while the air handler is running is to open the air handler door or cover to expose the blower fan then release it.

If the door SLAMS shut the system was running at a vacuum and return air is inadequate; or if opening the door causes the furnace to stop short cycling or shutting off that may be the same diagnosis.

    Encounter UNDERSIZED Render DUCTS

    and
run across Render AIR REGISTERS & DUCTS

Sentry out: most modern air handlers include a safety interlock on the air handler door - the switch volition turn off the furnace if you open up the door with equipment running. This is because it's easy to lose a finger or exist even more seriously injured by opening the air handler when equipment is running.

See RETURN AIR, Increment for details on other ways to set up this trouble.

See RETURN AIR, HVAC for a list of means you tin can improve return air catamenia charge per unit and quantity or volume.

Inadequate supply air ducts: warm air supply ducts that are likewise small, bent, constricted, leaky or perhaps take go disconnected in a hidden space such as an attic or crawl area.

See SUPPLY DUCT AIR LEAKS and

Some rules of pollex on heating air duct requirements are given

    at SUPPLY DUCTS & REGISTERS

Leaky duct work can too contribute to inadequate or weak air menstruation through the heat exchanger.

See AIR LEAKS in Render DUCTS

and AIR LEAKs in SUPPLY DUCTS

  • Electrical connection defects: a loose or corroded electrical wire bringing power to the burner OR at the limit switch or fan command lath can crusade intermittent burner operation
  • Fan limit switch defective: a defective or consumer-damaged fan limit switch may fail to operate ordinarily and in fact may be unsafe - a switch that permits the furnace to overheat tin can scissure the estrus exchanger, causing both plush impairment and potentially fatal carbon monoxide leaks into building air.

FAN LIMIT SWITCH describes how this command is installed, tested, diagnosed & adjusted.

Warnings include avoiding bending or forcing the control which then pushes it out of calibration.

  • Furnace pressure level switch tubing leak: a furnace that is cycling on-off can be caused by a leak in pressure switch tubing.

Thanks to reader Mark who commented (March 2015

    at MOBILE HOME HEATING SYSTEMS

that a furnace that cycles on and off may be caused by pressure level switch tubing that has a leak.

  • Gas burner problems: short cycling or loftier limit rocking in a gas fueled furnace may be due to excessive gas pressure, in plough caused by improper gas pressure level regulation: if the gas regulator delivers gas at a pressure higher than antcipated by the furnace design engineers the burner puts out too much heat, the plenum overheats during the heating cycle because the blower fan and moving air cannot remove rut fast-enough.

The result is that the furnace overheats and shuts off on high limit until the moving air cools the plenum back down.

  • Improper fan limit switch settings  or a damaged or defective command.

If the Fan-Limit switch FAN-ON setting is besides loftier and so the heat exchanger may be too hot past the fourth dimension the blower fan turns on.

With the high FAN-ON setting combined with added heat from continued burner functioning, on some furnaces the fan cannot cool downwards the estrus exchanger sufficiently to avoid reaching the FAN-OFF limit and then the limit reaches FAN-OFF and the burner turns OFF. Attempt dropping the FAN-ON setting. - Cheers to reader Tim for this ascertainment 2019-04-29

  • Oil burner nozzle over-sized: a too-large nozzle (or a modify that upped the oil burner fuel unit output pressure) may accept increased the oil burner firing rate over that the furnace is designed-for.

Cheque the nozzle size and fuel unit of measurement pressure against the furnace manufacturer's recommendations and allowable firing range on the furnace data tag.

    See OIL BURNER ELECTRODES

Oil fired heater BTU output estimating tip: If there is no data tag on the furnace or you can't find the oil burner output BTUH you can judge it as follows:

Multiply the oil burner nozzle size (firing rate in gallons per hour) x 138,200 (BTUs per gallon of No. 2 heating oil) x an efficiency estimate (use .75 for older furnaces and .80 for newer furnaces if you lot don't accept a contempo efficiency measurement).

  • Over-sized furnace for the heating load? - usually this but gives too-brusk on-cycles, an inefficient way to heat the home; in a cooling organization an over-sized A/C unit of measurement will have short on cycles that lead to failure to adequately dehumidify the building.

Meet details at FURNACE OVERSIZE Bug

  • Thermostat wiring or device defects: check for loose thermostat wires, debris-clogging of a thermostat's bimetallic spring or thermocouple (and clean them)

    See THERMOSTATS, HEATING / COOLING

  • Thermocouple lacking, or dirty thermistor on gas fired equipment: Short cycling or unexplained on-off cycling of heating equipment has also been traced (by one reader) to a dirty or failing thermocouple (peradventure the reader meant a dirty thermistor).

    See THERMISTORS

Or see THERMOCOUPLE REPAIR / REPLACEMENT

This condition was reported in the FAQs by a reader commenting

    at HEAT ANTICIPATOR Adjustment

The amount of supply and return ductwork a hot air heating system has can affects the actual efficiency of the heating system, as well as the life expectancy of the furnace itself.

If there isn't enough duct work to deliver the heat the furnace produces, evidently clients are cold, operating costs go up, efficiency goes downwardly, and eventually a premature fissure in the heat exchanger will result (the furnace tin can't get rid of the heat and it stresses out the metal in the heat exchanger). [one]

Watch out: while the Vermont regime publication that we quote in a higher place explains that short cycling can crack the furnace rut exchanger, nosotros need to understand that that means: a cracked heat exchanger is unsafe considering information technology may leak combustion gases or fatal carbon monoxide into a building. Besides leading to an expensive furnace repair or replacement, a cracked-estrus exchanger is dangerous.

Watch out: This render air opening boosts the total air output of the system merely it is an improper and unsafe blueprint.

In addition to this render air problem given above cheque this short list, then take a look at the furnace short cycling diagnostic word and examples that follow.

CASE #ii: Furnace BLOWER FAN Short-Cycling On and Off DURING a Call for Oestrus - BLOWER Brusk Cycling

The furnace air handler blower FAN goes OFF and then back ON during the heating bicycle while the thermostat continues all the time to call for oestrus, and the BURNER KEEPS RUNNING.

In this uncommon furnace cycling case, most likely the blower fan is moving so much air or at such a loftier velocity or is seeing return air that is so cold that the temperature in the supply plenum falls BELOW the FAN -ON temperature.

In that instance the FAN LIMIT SWITCH TURNS OFF the FAN to avoid blowing common cold air onto the building occupants. This is the same characteristic that keeps the fan from turning on before the plenum temperature is sufficiently high: a situation that occurs at the first of a telephone call for heat.

Causes of Furnace BLOWER FAN Short-Cycling During a Call for Heat

That happens most-often when

  • The fan speed is too high, perhaps on a control board the speed is set besides high for the system pattern or the incorrect pulley size has been installed on a belt-driven blower fan
  • The furnace burner is not adjusted properly - weak flame, inadequate combustion air (unsafe), dirty gas orifices, oil burner in need of service, burnt-out electrical heating elements - depending on furnace type
  • The oestrus exchanger is dirty or blocked - not enough heat transfer out into building air
  • Very cold air entering the system - blower on: poor return air blueprint picking upward more fresh cold air and not plenty return air from the building can cool down the plenum below the FAN ON temperature.

This may exist due to improper location (even an unsafe one) of a chief or additional common cold-air return.

I've seen systems that were picking upwardly 100% new cold air in a crawl infinite - no conditioned edifice air was returning to the furnace - that 's the most-expensive heating design possible and could be unsafe.

  • Poor electrical connections: a loose or corroded electrical wire bringing ability to the blower fan motor OR at the limit switch or fan command board can cause intermittent fan operation
  • A defective fan limit control switch

Spotter out: a number of writers (previously including this folio) confuse BLOWER cycling on and off during a telephone call for heat - beingness discussed equally Instance #ii here, and BURNER cycling on and off during heat - discussed at CASE one

Read people's explanations with care: the overheating in the plenum that causes CASE 1 volition shut off the burner, non the fan.

Diagnose Case 2: Blower Short Cycling

Picket the punch on the furnace FAN LIMIT CONTROL switch during a heating bicycle. If you see the punch rotate to the FAN ON betoken you should then hear the blower fan start upward.

Keep watching. If the dial rotates back towards cooler temperatures a bit that'due south normal, but the blower should keep running until the thermostat says it has been satisfied.

IF instead the dial continues to rotate towards lower temperatures until information technology drops below the FAN ON setting,

And so something is causing the plenum temperature to get so low that the limit switch should TURN THE FAN OFF - that'due south to avoid bravado cold air on occupants.

An instance of burner-on short cycling or high limit rocking is discussed in the reader Q&A given subsequently on this page at

EXAMPLE of CASE-one LIMIT ROCKING with the burner staying on and the fan going on and off

Instance iii: Furnace BLOWER Fan Brusk Cycles On and Off at the Finish of a Call FOR Rut - BURNER REMAINS OFF - Residual Estrus Purge problem

The furnace blower fan cycles on and off After the call for rut has been satisfied and Later on the BURNER has TURNED OFF.

Commonly this is a trouble of residual heat in the furnace oestrus exchanger rising into and re-heating the plenum air, causing the fan limit switch to plow the fan back on to try to cool downwardly the system by extending the heat exchanger temperature purge cycle fourth dimension.

Some causes of this problem include:

  • Fan speed too high: at the end of heat bicycle during purge cycle so much air moves through the rut exchanger and supply plenum that the air therein is cooled enough to plough off the blower; simply residual heat in the heat exchanger re-heats the plenum air and turns the fan back on
  • Very cold air inbound the organisation - blower off: a similar but less common cold air problem tin occur but afterwards the furnace burner has close down, during the rut purge interval.

Abnormally cold incoming air temperature enters the heat exchanger while the blower is still running merely the burner has shut down - this is the heat purge wheel that occurs after the thermostat has stopped calling for heat.

The incoming cold air (with burner off)

may cool downward the supply plenum so rapidly that the fan limit switch, working properly, turns the blower OFF before enough heat has been extracted from the steel or bandage fe of the heat exchanger itself.

If this is happening, rising estrus and air (by convection) from the still-hot heat exchanger into the supply plenum may warm the plenum once again and turn the blower fan dorsum ON in an attempt to cool down the system to a prophylactic "plough off" temperature.

In this case the blower will remain off but the fan turns on and off i or more times after the thermostat has stopped calling for heat.

Blower fan short cycling on and off likewise frequently during the heating wheel is often traced to this problem.

Why would we accept "abnormally depression incoming air temperature" at a furnace?

We've seen this problem at buildings with improper HVAC duct design, in detail where some or all of the render air to the furnace is existence taken from an opening right at the furnace such every bit a unit located in a cold basement or crawl space(see our photo, in a higher place left).

Sometimes in an effort to improve the total airflow delivered by a furnace a technician will cut an opening in the return ducts in an unheated basement or crawl expanse.

  • Improper fan limit switch settings  or a damaged or lacking command

Details about this problem are

at FURNACE FAN CYCLES AFTER Oestrus

Example 4: (uncommon) furnace BURNER and also BLOWER FAN both Cycling ON-OFF DURING a CALL FOR Heat

Special thank you to reader Goeffrey for pointing out this problem: similar to Instance #i, HI-Limit rocking, the burner turns off during a call for estrus just the blower fan also turns off before the phone call for heat is satisfied, then both turn back on - cycling repeatedly.

Causes of both burner & blower fan cycling off & on during a phone call for heat.

  • Burner or fuel or burner ignition defect: an ignition or combustion defect can crusade the burner to turn off not under the control of the fan limit switch but because of another external defect such as a bad igniter (gas burners) or bad thermocouple (gas burners)

When the burner cuts off on its ain earlier the call for oestrus is satisfied, the blower will continue to run until the plenum temperature drops beneath the FAN ON temperature.

As the call for heat continues, depending on the furnace burner type and its controls, the burner will endeavour to re-ignite itself. On systems whose burner tin can re-ignite successfully, the burner will thenturn on and as plenum temperature increases the blower fan will turn on again also.

I replaced my Fan Limit Command Switch to address the 3rd scenario of the blower cycling dorsum on westward/o the burner for merely a minute or 2 after a heating cycle. This stock-still that problem. I at present take noticed another trouble which does non meet the criteria of any of the iii examples.

The issue is similar to the High Limit Rocking example #i, except when the burner shuts off prior to satisfying the thermostats set temperate ( call for estrus), the blower shuts off likewise. The burner then immediately relights, the blower comes back on, and the organisation runs until the call for rut is satisfied past the house reaching the temp called for on the thermostat.

This "close downward" which is the burner and the blower usually occurs about 10 minutes or and then later the thermostat is turned on or upwardly. In one case the organisation turns back on after the burner immediately relights, it will run as long every bit needed depending on how high the thermostat is fix.

It never shuts off either burner or blower again until the heating cycle is consummate and information technology is supposed to shut them off.

Because this "2nd run" is ofttimes a lot longer than the initial 5-10 I don't recollect information technology is because of getting besides hot, or else why would it exist able to then immediately relight and run for twice as long or longer with no problem? Any ideas?? Thank you!

Moderator said: watch the fan limit control punch

Permit'south endeavour this. Watch The Fan limit switch when the furnace is behaving in the fashion that you described and brand a note of where the temperature punch is rotating and what points information technology reaches. That might help us figure out what'southward actually happening here.

  1. If the burner stops earlier the fan stops and so

1.a. If the fan limit dial is reaching the upper limit of the control so turning off the burner then the organization is overheating

1.b. If the fan limit dial is not reaching the upper limit of the command but the burner stops, and so there is a problem with the burner operation itself such as an ignition failure, a fuel supply failure, or peradventure flue gas spillage at a typhoon hood.

  2. If the fan stops before the burner stops

    then see Case 2:

Reader follow-up: problem traced to bad ignition controller

Turned out to be the Ignition control. It progressed to where it would have trouble lighting sometimes when the thermostat chosen for heat. I tried this road because I knew the part was sometime and it seemed to me that if the result was with the ignition, or burner turning off then right back on, information technology might work.

And then far and then good. It seems to operate normally and burner lights right away when thermostat calls for estrus, and stays lit until thermostat satisfied. Fan limit switch is working fine too at present, and turns fan on/off when it is supposed to.

Reader Q&A - also see the FAQs series linked-to below

If this is a direct bulldoze blower fan motor this sounds like

- loose fan wiring connector

- bad fan relay

- bad fan motor or bad motor start/run capacitor

IF your fan is driven by a caster and belt I'd wait for a loose pulley or chugalug

The furnace supply fan comes on after a telephone call to heat. So information technology slows (or turns off for a second or two) then the burner fires. while the supply fan runs. I tin can experience the air go from stone cold to warm. And then the motor stops. Complete cycle is about iii to iv minutes.

Lori,

Do I plow on auto or fan when on machine the motor just runs and no heat when I plough on fan and then the keeeps running I don't know how to program

How-do-you-do. My name is Tim, non anonymous:)

I just read 3 articles/questions that all did the aforementioned thing. In the title it says "FAN" cycling 'during' oestrus bike, then at some indicate in the commodity or question it switches to 'furnace going on and off' and then back to the same in all 3, 'furnace cycling 'after' oestrus is satisfied'. lol

Besides information technology being quite annoying, none of them dealt with my problem

Everything working fine, Thermostat calls, burner comes on and pre-heats a minute, so fan comes on, and then it turns off after 10-20 secs, heat stays on though, and then fan comes back on. Information technology does this anywhere from 1 to 4 or v times then it will finally stay on complete it'southward bike normally. It's kept the house at temp for a couple months similar this

. I accept tried every combination of adjustments on the limit switch controls, withal does the same affair. Then I thought Aha!, I bet the belt is too tight and spinning information technology as well fast, so I become to loosen the belt I observe it incredibly loose already and think oh, well it needs to be tightened, and so I tighten it.

Lol, at present the fan won't even come on, it's not that tight only it tries to come up on and then gives upwards. And so, ok, I loosen the belt to information technology's precarious tension, and the furnace goes back to working every bit I just described. At present the final bicycle, the fan did non come up on consistently after a few shutdowns, it merely goes on and off for twenty second intervals until the thermostat is satisfied...…..

NOTES-

- brand new belt which actually seems to accept stretched out as I take had to shim the motor to create length(yes, information technology's same number),

- brand new limit switch, that's when this all started, I thought it was just a matter of getting the settings right but,...

- I installed it the same way the old one was which is upside downward. Add together the cold air ducting issue to this point which is the system map is proven successful for many years

- I'thousand in Edmonton, Canada. Sub zero nights, March was insanely cold after the new limit switch install

Tx to whoever does all this work, it's quite amazing really.

What is making my estrus cut off after each degree and dorsum on another degree and dorsum off? Information technology cuts off and on after each degree unti it gets up to the temperature information technology is assail.

If there'southward no problem in that location I'd look for a control or thermostat outcome

Too don't forget to await for a dirty or blocked air filter. Reduced air-menses through a furnace tin can consequence in overheating at the heat exchanger, causing the limit command to turn off the oestrus.
